"I have plans this weekend—is it okay to get it done on Thursday?"
"Will it be noticeable if I go to work the next day?"
This is what people considering fillers right before an upcoming event ask most frequently.
Hello, I'm Kwon Si-jin, the director you'll be meeting at DA Clinic Myeongdong shortly ^^
We're getting ready to open our doors in Myeongdong soon, and since so many people worry about timing ahead of our opening, I wanted to put this together for your information first.
With filler, ordinary activity is generally possible from the next day. However, there is a gap of a few days between "being able to go about daily routines" and "showing no visible signs."
How those few days differ depending on the treatment area and product becomes the standard for setting your schedule.I hope this post helps you establish that standard.
Why it differs by area
Swelling tends to drop more slowly the thinner the skin and the more it moves.
- Lipsthin and constantly moving, so early swelling is the most noticeable. Best to leave a few days
- Under the eyesthin skin, so swelling and bruising stand out easily
- Chin and foreheadrelatively thick, so swelling shows less
- Nasolabial foldssomewhere in between; an area of expression, so it takes a little longer to settle
Generally early swelling drops noticeably within a few days, and settling fully is described as taking around two weeks.
It differs by product too
Inside the single word "filler" sit different ingredients, and the recovery pattern divides with them.
- Hyaluronic acid (HA) familythe most widely used. Duration is generally given as six months to two years, and it's characterised by being reversible with a dissolving agent
- Calcium familymentioned at one to two years, and not dissolved by the same agent
- PLLA familyworks by stimulating collagen production, so it fills in slowly. Judging it right afterwards leads easily to disappointment
That last one especially.Filling and building differ in when the result appears at all. Some treatments you place today and see tomorrow; others need weeks of waiting.
How long does bruising last?
Bruising is separate from swelling. It can occur where the needle grazes a vessel's path, and generally fades within one to two weeks.
If you want to reduce bruising, check these before the treatment.
- Tell us in advance whether you're taking any blood-thinning medication or supplements
- Avoid alcohol the night before
Don't stop a medication you've been prescribed on your own judgement, though. That has to be discussed with the doctor who prescribed it.
How the day itself goes
To gauge the downtime, it helps to know how the day runs.
- Mappinglooking in the mirror together to decide where and how much to fill. Checking while you make expressions is more accurate
- Anaesthesiaanaesthetic cream or a local block, depending on the area
- Injectiongenerally described as ten to thirty minutes depending on the area
- Reviewrefining while checking the balance. Watch whether this is done sitting up
Swelling generally rises from that evening and is most pronounced the following morning. So looking puffier the next morning than on the evening of the day itself is the natural course.
What happens when the duration ends
This question comes up a lot too."Won't I sag more than before once it dissolves?"
The hyaluronic acid family is described as gradually breaking down and being absorbed. It recedes gently rather than collapsing one day.
And no evidence has been established that having filler stretches the original tissue and leaves things worse.Ageing continues regardless of treatment, though, so attributing a later state to "the filler" is difficult.
Whether to continue is something to decide then.Reviewing it while some remains rather than after it has gone entirely is often described as giving a more natural outcome.
If you have something important coming up
If you have a wedding or an important occasion, I'd suggest leaving at least two weeks.
A few days for swelling to drop, two weeks for the shape to settle, plus time to refine if needed — that's how it adds up.
To "I have an event tomorrow, can I have it today?", honestly, I wouldn't recommend it.
During this period
- On the day, don't rub firmly or massage
- For a few days it's safer to postpone anything that heats the body — saunas, steam rooms, hard exercise
- Depending on the area, best to avoid sleeping face-down
- While there's swelling, raising your pillow a little at night helps
We look at the under-eye a little differently
If I single out one area, it's the under-eye.
The skin is thin, so a product that's too firm placed shallow can show through with a bluish cast. It's easily mistaken for bruising, but it's a different thing.
And what looks like an under-eye hollow is sometimes not a hollow at all but a shadow cast by fat pushing forward.Filling that makes it look heavier instead.
Fortunately the hyaluronic acid family is reversible, so if you're unhappy with the result, dissolving remains an option. If it's your first time, starting with the reversible side sits easier.
Don't wait these out
Rarely, if a vascular problem arises, a fast response matters.
- Skin turning pale or mottled
- Pain that keeps worsening
- Blurred vision
In these cases don't wait — contact where you had the treatment immediately.
For reference, whether the dissolving agent (hyaluronidase) is immediately available is a fair question to ask before the treatment. The probability is low, but it's a point where preparedness differs, so it's worth asking.
There's no need to rush in these cases
Honestly, if the cause isn't hollowing but sagging, filling alone will leave you wanting.
Adding more filler to a shadow created by a descending cheek can make the face look heavier instead. What needs looking at here isn't filling but lifting.
And it has to be postponed if there's inflammation in the treatment area, or an active infection there. If any of your medications thin the blood, please tell us that in advance too.
In my experience, a place that says "another method would suit you better than filler" tends to be the more trustworthy one.
- Normal life is fine the next day
- Allow two weeks for the shape to settle
- If you have something important, leave extra time
Frequently asked questions
Q. Can I use a cold compress?
A. It can help with early swelling, but the guidance can differ by area and product.Following the instructions from where you had it done first is safest.
Q. When can I wear make-up?
A. Needle marks can be irritated before they've healed, so start from the point advised where you had the treatment.
Q. It looks smaller than at first.
A. Early on the swelling makes it look larger. What has settled at around two weeks is closer to the actual result.
Q. It feels lumpy — can I massage it myself?
A. Don't massage firmly. Early swelling and a genuine lump need separating, and the responses differ. If something still feels firm after two weeks, it's safer to have it checked where you had it done.
Q. Is it better to put it all in at once, or to divide it?
A. For a first time, putting in less and adding if it falls short is usually advised as the safer order.Judging after the swelling has dropped is also more accurate.
Q. When can I exercise?
A. Light activity is generally fine from the next day.Exercise that raises the body's heat considerably is safer postponed for a few days — heat works in the direction of more swelling.
Q. Which is better, domestic or imported?
A. Far more important than where it's made is whether the formulation suits that area. There are refined domestic products, and an imported one that doesn't suit the area gives a disappointing result all the same.
Q. What should I prepare before the treatment?
A. The medications and supplements you take, a record of previous treatments, and one or two photos in natural light are enough. What filler you had, and where, bears directly on this plan.
Q. Can I wash my face the next day?
A. Generally yes, but not rubbing is what matters.Don't rub at the needle sites in particular, and since guidance can differ by area, follow the instructions from where you had it done first.
The next day and two weeks differ
It all gathers here in the end.
Filler allows ordinary activity the next day, but allow two weeks for the shape to settle.
One thing to add: the surest way to reduce downtime is leaving room in your schedule.Rather than tricks to speed recovery, choosing a day where you aren't under pressure serves both the result and your peace of mind. A rushed schedule sometimes leads to excessive volume too.
I'd be glad if you feel differently now than you did when you started.
