When acne and breakouts are a concern

Care guide by concern

Acne is categorised into stages — active inflammation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), and scarring (ice-pick, rolling, boxcar) — each requiring a different treatment approach. Active inflammation is addressed with NeoBeam (a 1450nm laser) that selectively heats the sebaceous glands; pigmentation is broken down with PicoPlus and laser toning; and scarring is treated through dermal regeneration via CO2 Fraxel and Potenza RF microneedling. At DA Clinic Myeongdong, we assess the stage first and then outline a sequential treatment plan.

See if this describes your condition

Acne calls for entirely different treatment in its active phase versus its scarring phase. Attempting scar procedures during the active stage can worsen inflammation, so staging the diagnosis is important. On your visit, we diagnose the degree of active inflammation and the type of scarring separately (pitted scars, red marks, pigmented marks). We combine extraction, medication, and lasers to match each stage, and carry out scar procedures only after the inflammation has settled.

If this sounds familiar

  • Breakouts keep coming back in the same spots
  • My breakouts leave behind red marks or indentations once they clear
  • I've ended up with a scar after popping a blemish myself
  • My skin flares up again whenever I stop taking the dermatology medication

Key Causes

  • 01Excess sebum production and pore blockage
  • 02Proliferation of acne bacteria (C. acnes) and inflammatory response
  • 03Hormonal changes and stress
  • 04Scarring caused by improper self-extraction

Frequently Asked Questions

Can scar treatment be done while active acne is still present?

Performing strong scar treatments during periods of active inflammation can spread inflammation or worsen pigmentation. At DA Clinic Myeongdong, we recommend a staged protocol: first stabilising active acne with NeoBeam, then moving on to scar treatment after a 1–2 month interval.

Can acne scars be removed completely?

Scar responses vary considerably depending on type (ice pick, boxcar, rolling) and depth, and complete elimination is difficult to achieve. Rather than expecting results from a single session, we recommend a gradual approach across multiple treatments; combining CO2 Fraxel and RF microneedling tends to yield better outcomes than using either alone. At DA Clinic Myeongdong, we first assess your scar type and then discuss the most suitable combination and number of sessions with you. The degree of improvement varies by individual.

Is acne extraction painful?

It depends on the level of inflammation, but we proceed in a way that minimises irritation, with calming care added where needed. We avoid forceful extraction, as it can cause scarring.

How many sessions are needed for scar treatment?

It varies considerably with the depth and type of scar, but 3–5 or more sessions are often carried out in stages. After diagnosis, we first explain a realistic number of sessions and what to expect.

Results and recovery vary from person to person.
